Keynote: What Will Really Protect the Consumer?

Consumers need more transparency into and control over how their data is used online—few would argue that point. But where should it come from? The “Ad Choices” ad notice? A targeting “on/off” switch on a browser? Federal legislation? Which will really make the difference for consumers? From programs working now like the Digital Advertising Alliance’s (DAA) Self-Regulatory Program for Online Behavioral Advertising, to a range of proposals around the “Do Not Track” concept, to more sweeping legislative initiatives under consideration by Congress, FTC Director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection David Vladeck will examine the current state of initiatives on the table and offer his perspective on which, or which combination, is most viable to push consumer privacy forward.

Keynote: David Vladeck, Director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection, FTC

2:40 pm

Panel: As Easy as D-N-T?

Of all of the ideas for fostering consumer privacy on the table, none seems to raise as many eyebrows and engender as much debate as “Do Not Track.” Why the kerfuffle? Plenty of reasons. What actually constitutes “tracking?” Considering all of the practical web functionality that requires some sort of tracking, do we really mean “do not target?” Do most consumers realize what they wouldn’t be getting if all such tracking were turned off? The list goes on. Join leaders from Mozilla, the DAA and CDT for an insider’s perspective on the forms that DNT could take and their viability for helping to solve the privacy problem.

Can giving consumers meaningful transparency and control over how their information is used create better, more loyal customers? Research suggests that it can. In a study with Millward Brown, Evidon found, among other things, that 67% of consumers feel more positive toward brands that give them the kind of control that comes with a robust ad notice experience, while 36% said they’re even more likely to purchase from these brands. Join leaders from some of the most fundamental global brands for their take on how empowering consumers is affecting the choices they make about their businesses.

“This is About Me, Right?”—A Candid Discussion with Consumers

From trade organizations to media to government, everyone with a stake in the privacy conversation generally agrees that the issue, first and foremost, is about consumers—whether it’s truly an altruistic concern for their privacy, keeping them loyal customers, or both. But while the conversation is never-ending, it rarely includes consumers themselves. We’re changing that now. Join moderator Doug Weaver for an unprecedented discussion in which consumers will come face-to-face with industry executives, regulators and the media, and offer their unfiltered opinions on whether privacy initiatives being discussed will change things, and whether it matters.
