The Evidon Weekly Digest 6/27/12

By Adam DeMartino
Do Not Track remained a subject of interest in the news this past week, with more strong words coming from the FTC, the IAB and industry leaders on the increasingly contentious issues of header implementation and “tracking” definitions. In a letter to the W3C (Worldwide Web Consortium), Commissioner J. Thomas Rosch criticized Microsoft as well as Reps. Ed Markey ( (D-MA) and Joe Barton (R-TX), writing that their default DNT “on” setting in IE10 would mean that “Microsoft, not consumers, will be exercising choice as to what signal the browser will send." In a similar vein, a recent IAB Marketplace — Advertising Technology conference panel focused on the overarching importance of getting Do Not Track “just right” for all parties involved, referencing talks with the White House from earlier this year as a point of government and industry consensus. Conversely, on the other side of the Atlantic, ComputerWorld reported that European regulators are now urging the W3C to let Microsoft set users' preferences but with one caveat—they want browser makers to present Do Not Track options to users when they first install or run a browser and allow them to change the default. We'd also like to remind you that we are hosting a webinar as a followup to our Evidon Empower EU II summit tomorrow at 3:00 pm GMT that will focus on the primary takeaway from the event: take action now and implement a robust consent solution. In “Lessons from Evidon Empower: How to Comply with the ePrivacy Directive,” we’ll demonstrate solutions that businesses can use now to empower consumers and prove that they’re applying best practices to comply with the law. You can register for the event here.
